Because waking up to chaos is optional.
As a parent, the days can feel like a blur of crumbs, chaos, and cuddles — and by the evening, the house often looks like a tornado has passed through. While I fully believe in living in our home (not just cleaning it), I also love waking up to a fresh, calm space. That’s where the evening reset comes in — small, manageable things that help future-you breathe a little easier in the morning.
Here are 10 simple things I try to do most evenings to reset the house — no perfection required:
1. Clear the Kitchen Counters
Even just stacking dishes, wiping surfaces, and putting things back where they belong makes a huge difference. It sets the tone for a calmer start the next day.
2. Start the Dishwasher (or Wash Up)
Running the dishwasher at night = clean dishes in the morning. It’s one of those little wins that feels big.
3. Quick Tidy of the Main Living Area
I’m talking five minutes max. Toys in a basket, cushions roughly back on the sofa, a quick floor sweep if needed. Done is better than perfect.
4. Refill Water Bottles & Lunch Boxes
This saves a surprising amount of stress in the morning — especially during the school week.
5. Set Out Clothes for Tomorrow
For you and the kids, if possible. Bonus: fewer early morning wardrobe battles.
6. Quick Laundry Check
Switch the load, hang it up, or pop a wash on delay to start in the morning. It keeps Mount Laundry at bay.
7. Wipe Down Bathroom Surfaces
A quick once-over with a cloth or wipe keeps things looking fresh with minimal effort.
8. Do a Toy Sweep
If your kids are old enough, make it a game. If not, a big basket scoop-up will do!
9. Light a Candle or Diffuser
It’s a simple signal to your brain: the day is winding down.
10. Sit Down With a Cup of Tea
The most important part of the reset. Your house doesn’t have to be perfect — but you deserve a moment to breathe and enjoy it.
Remember: an evening reset isn’t about making your home spotless. It’s about giving yourself a small sense of control and calm before the next round of beautiful chaos begins.
