Deep Down in Yorkshire: Our Day at Stump Cross Caverns (AKA, Where’s the Dragon?)

Let me paint the scene: four kids, a slightly overambitious mum, snacks in questionable condition at the bottom of a rucksack, and the promise of an “underground adventure.” Naturally, the girls asked if we were going to find treasure, a secret passage, or a dragon. The bar was high.

Welcome to Stump Cross Caverns, one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems—literally. These ancient limestone caves were discovered in the 1800s, and while there were no dragons (sorry, girls), there was something magical about going deep beneath the earth’s surface and letting curiosity take over.

Arrival: Down the Rabbit Hole (But Make It Yorkshire)

Located on the scenic drive between Pateley Bridge and Grassington, getting to Stump Cross feels like a mini adventure all on its own. We pulled up to gorgeous views of the Dales—and then immediately sprinted to the toilet because someone had waited until the car park to announce they were desperate.

The staff were lovely from the get-go, especially when they realised we were a travelling circus of four excited kids and one mother already wondering if this had been a brave or foolish decision.

Into the Caverns: Cold, Drippy, and Completely Captivating

The caverns themselves? Honestly stunning. Cold, yes. Slightly damp? Of course. But also eerie and beautiful, with winding paths, twinkling mineral deposits, and all sorts of strange rock formations with fun names.

The kids had torches (provided as part of their tickets, which instantly made them feel like mini explorers), and we followed the trail through narrow passages and open chambers. Every turn sparked a new “Wow!” or “Look at that!” or “Mum, do you think fairies live here?”

And let me just say—watching your children marvel at something that’s been hidden under the earth for MILLIONS of years? Core memory stuff. The youngest declared one of the formations “a frozen waterfall made of stars.” And you know what? I’m stealing that for future poetry.

The Crystal Fairy Hunt: Pure Genius

Stump Cross has a brilliant kids’ activity called the Crystal Fairy Hunt, where little fairies are hidden around the cavern paths. The girls were absolutely determined to find them all—and for once, I wasn’t the one rushing them along. I loved watching them slow down, scan the walls, and giggle at their discoveries. It turned the walk into a proper adventure rather than just a “don’t touch that” kind of museum trip.

Plus, there’s a sweet little prize at the end for those who complete it, which adds a bit of extra motivation for younger kids (or parents who want to avoid the “I’m bored” whine).

Above Ground: Cake, Crayons & Yorkshire Views

Once we’d resurfaced from the underworld (with cold fingers and wide eyes), we popped into the on-site café. I didn’t have high hopes—some tourist attractions serve up soggy toasties and over-priced drinks—but this place was genuinely lovely. Great coffee, warm food, and a spot to sit with panoramic views of the Dales while the kids coloured in fairy maps.

There’s also a small cinema room that plays a short film about the history of the caves, which we half-watched while devouring brownies. Worth it.

What to Know Before You Go: Mum Tips

  • Wrap up warm – it’s chilly underground, even in summer.
  • Buggies won’t make it – if you’ve got little ones, a carrier is your best bet.
  • Bring spare clothes – not a messy place, but kids + caves = inevitable dirt.
  • Book ahead – especially in school holidays.
  • Don’t skip the fairy hunt – trust me, it kept them busy and added a touch of magic.

Final Thoughts

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Stump Cross Caverns, but it turned out to be one of those rare days that’s equal parts relaxing and memorable. No overstimulation, no plastic play centres, no endless queuing. Just time together, exploring something ancient and beautiful, and having conversations that didn’t revolve around screens or snack negotiations (well… mostly).

If you’re ever near the Yorkshire Dales and want a day out that’s affordable, educational, and full of that spark that only childhood can bring—go underground. Who knows what you might discover.
