Learning to Love the Dress Again: A Plus Size Mum’s Wardrobe Shift

Let me start by saying this: I’ve always admired people who float through summer in effortless dresses — twirling in florals, glowing in linen, or stomping through festivals in boots and black lace. They look bold, carefree, and unapologetically themselves. I used to think, I wish I could pull that off.

But lately, I’ve been challenging that voice.

This year, I’ve set a quiet little goal for myself: to wear more dresses. Not because I “should,” or because I’m trying to change anything — but because dresses actually make me feel good. When I find the right one, I stand taller. I feel lighter. More… me. And after years of throwing on leggings and oversized tees out of routine (or survival), that small shift matters.

The Confidence Gap: Plus Size and Dress Shopping

But let’s be honest — finding dresses that actually flatter a plus size body and make you feel confident is no easy task.

I can’t count how many times I’ve tried on a dress only to feel like I’m wearing a floral bin bag. Or worse — a dress that technically fits, but clearly wasn’t designed with comfort, shape, or movement in mind. There’s nothing like hyping yourself up for a “treat yourself” try-on, only to be met with gaping busts, clingy fabric, or sleeves that seem to fight back.

And don’t get me started on the fashion industry’s idea of plus size. I’m not trying to be hidden under shapeless tents or draped in nothing but animal print and cold shoulders. I want structure. Shape. Stretch. Something that shows my personality — not just my size.

Dresses That Make Me Feel Like Me

Still, I’ve had some small wins. A floaty black smock dress that makes me feel witchy and wonderful. A wrap dress that hugs in all the right places and doesn’t gape at the chest. A sage green number that makes me feel like a forest fairy mum, even when I’m shouting for someone to get their shoes on.

When I wear these pieces, something shifts. I feel feminine but strong. Soft, but still like a force of nature. Like I’m showing up in the world with a little more intention, and a lot more self-respect.

Because it’s not just about the dress — it’s about making space for joy in your wardrobe again. It’s about remembering that you deserve to feel good in the clothes you wear. That you don’t need to shrink, squeeze, or smooth yourself into something to be worthy of a beautiful dress.

A Note to You (and Me)

If you’re on a similar journey — learning to love your reflection, experimenting with clothes again, or simply trying to wear something that isn’t just “easy” — I see you. It’s not always simple. But it’s powerful.

So here’s to wearing the dress. The one that makes you twirl, or strut, or smile at your own reflection a little more often. Because you deserve to feel good in your body — exactly as it is.
