Through My Lens: How Photography Became My Mum-Life Lifeline

Photography has always been something I’ve enjoyed. I actually started quite young—at 16, I was volunteering to take photos at local charity events, just me and my camera, figuring things out as I went. Even back then, I loved the feeling of capturing something real—something that might’ve gone unnoticed if no one had stopped to look.

That love never really left. Over the years, it’s taken on different shapes depending on where I’ve been in life. And now, as a mum, it’s become something deeper. These days, my camera (my trusty Nikon Z9 II) is my quiet little sidekick. Whether we’re out for a walk, exploring somewhere new, or just playing in the garden, I always bring it along—just in case something catches my eye. (And something always does.)

Right now, I’m really drawn to nature photography. Flowers, leaves, trees, shadows—the little details that often get overlooked. I find beauty in the small things. A curling petal, the pattern of raindrops on a leaf, the way the light filters through the trees. There’s something calming about focusing in on those moments, especially when the rest of life feels a bit full-on.

It’s never been about being “perfect” or ticking boxes. I’m not aiming for curated feeds or polished images—I’m capturing real life. Real motherhood. Real mess. Real joy. As someone who’s a bit more alternative (I’ll take muddy boots and a full moon over white sofas any day), photography gives me space to express myself and my version of beauty.

Some days I photograph moody skies and tangled branches. Other days, it’s the kids mid-laugh or a half-eaten snack on the windowsill. Either way, it reminds me to slow down, breathe, and pay attention to the now.

So if you’re thinking about trying photography—or getting back into it—this is your sign. Pick up your camera (or your phone!) and just start. You don’t need a plan. Just notice the things that speak to you. The beauty’s already there—you just have to look.
