Some board games are a true test of patience. Some are actually fun. I have learned the difference the hard way. If a game involves crying, flipping the board or rules that take longer to explain than to play, it is banned.
Here are the games we can play as a family without anyone needing a lie down afterwards.
Cluedo
We love this one. Solving mysteries makes us all feel like detectives and the kids get very dramatic about their guesses. It is the only time we celebrate accusing family members of crimes.
The Game of Life
This one is always a journey. One minute you are living your best life, the next minute you are driving a tiny plastic car full of children and questionable life choices. Very realistic. Very fun.
Four in a Row
Simple. Quick. Competitive. The perfect game when someone insists they hate all games. Also great for when energy levels are low but we still want to do something together.
Dobble
Fast, silly and no one can explain why they suddenly cannot find the one picture that matches. The kids always beat me and I am still pretending I am fine with it.
UNO
This game turns us all into competitive monsters but in a fun way. It is fast, loud and full of dramatic UNO shouting. Someone always forgets to pick up their cards and someone always gets revenge with a +4. Pure family chaos. We love it.
These are the games that give us laughter, teamwork and only a small amount of dramatic sighing. They are our go to choices for rainy days, tired evenings or when someone says the sentence every parent fears: I am bored.
Board games do not always need to be stressful. Sometimes they can be fun and a chance to actually enjoy each other’s company. And if all else fails, we can always cheat a little and pretend we did not.
Honourable Mentions (Games We Are Currently Avoiding)
Monopoly
Takes seven years to finish. Ends in tears. Always a sore loser and a suspicious banker.
Jenga
It is all fun and games until the entire tower collapses and someone storms off like they just lost a championship title.
Frustration
The name says everything. The kids love pressing the dice bubble. I love pretending we lost it.
Operation
Bzzzt. Bzzzt. Bzzzt. Anxiety in toy form.
Every trivia game ever
The kids do not know the answers and I cannot remember anything since 2014.
