Do You Need to Rope Drop Disney? (Honest Family Experience)

If you’ve looked into Disney planning at all, you’ve probably heard it over and over again:

“Get there for rope drop.”

“Arrive before park opening.”

“Early mornings are the key.”

And we… didn’t do that. Not once.

Our earliest start was around 10am, and some days we didn’t even arrive until 11am or midday—usually after a proper breakfast.

And honestly? It worked perfectly for our family.

Why We Skipped Rope Drop

We were travelling as a family of 6, with four kids—and the idea of getting everyone up, ready, fed, and out the door for early park opening just didn’t feel realistic (or enjoyable).

Instead, we chose:

- Slower mornings

- Proper breakfasts

- A more relaxed start to the day

And that alone made the whole trip feel less stressful.

Mornings That Actually Felt Like a Holiday

No alarms at 6am.

No dragging tired kids out of bed.

No rushing to beat crowds.

Instead, our mornings looked like:

- Getting up naturally

- Sitting down for breakfast

- Taking our time getting ready

Some days we didn’t head to the parks until 11 or even 12—and it felt so much nicer than rushing.

Did We Miss Out on Rides?

This is the big question—and the honest answer is… not really.

Yes, rope drop can help you get on popular rides faster.

But we still managed to:

- Ride everything we really wanted

- Make the most of our time in the parks

- Have full, busy days without feeling rushed

We weren’t trying to “do everything”—we were trying to enjoy it.

The Trade-Off (Because There Is One)

Let’s be real—there are downsides to skipping rope drop:

- Queues can be longer later in the day

- You miss that quieter early morning window

- Popular rides might have bigger waits

But for us, those trade-offs were worth it.

Why It Worked So Well With Kids

This was the biggest reason we’d do it the same way again.

By not rope dropping:

- The kids were well rested

- Mornings felt calm instead of chaotic

- There were fewer meltdowns

And that made a huge difference to the overall experience.

Because a tired child in a long queue is not fun for anyone.

We Focused on the Full Day Instead

Instead of early starts, we focused on:

- Staying later

- Taking breaks when we needed them

- Enjoying the parks at our own pace

It felt like a holiday—not a schedule we were trying to keep up with.

Final Thoughts

Rope drop works for a lot of people—but it’s not the only way to do Disney.

For us, starting our days between 10am and midday meant:

- Less stress

- Happier kids

- A more relaxed, enjoyable trip

And we still had an amazing time.

So if you’re stressing about early starts… you really don’t have to.
