I Want a Pinterest House… But Mine Is Definitely Lived In

I would absolutely love one of those Pinterest-worthy houses.

You know the ones — perfectly styled, everything neutral, cushions that somehow match without looking like they’ve tried too hard, soft lighting, clear surfaces, and not a single random object in sight.

The kind of house where everything just looks calm.

Effortless.

Put together.

And then there’s mine.

A house that is very much lived in.

The paintwork has scratches that I keep noticing but never quite get around to fixing, the surfaces somehow collect clutter faster than I can clear it, and there always seems to be something somewhere that doesn’t belong there.

The sofa has mismatched cushions that definitely weren’t chosen as a set, along with far too many blankets that I refuse to move because someone is always cold, or tired, or just wants to be wrapped up for no reason at all.

There are toys that have made their way downstairs and then just… stayed there, like they’ve decided this is their home now.

And then there’s the pile on the stairs.

The pile that is meant to go upstairs.

The pile that I fully intend to take up every single time I walk past it.

The pile that somehow never moves.

I see it.

I acknowledge it.

And yet… it remains.

Every single day.

My house isn’t minimal.

It isn’t aesthetic.

It doesn’t look like a calm, curated space that belongs on a Pinterest board.

But it is full.

Full of people, noise, movement, and life happening all at once.

It’s the kind of house where things get used, moved, left, picked up, and then somehow left again.

And while I do still look at those perfectly styled homes and think “I’d love that,” I also know that this version, the slightly chaotic, cluttered, lived-in version, is what our life actually looks like right now.

And maybe it’s not supposed to look perfect.

Maybe it’s just supposed to look like us.

And right now… this is us.
