I get asked quite a lot what keeps my kids busy.
And I feel like I should start this by saying… nothing keeps them busy all the time.
If you’re expecting some magical list that guarantees hours of peace and quiet, this is not that.
This is more a collection of things that work… sometimes.
On a good day.
With the right mood.
And minimal arguing.
Bikes and scooters are probably the most reliable, especially when we actually manage to get out of the house and into some fresh air, because once they’re moving, they tend to stay moving for a while, which is ideal for everyone involved.
Drawing and colouring comes and goes, but when it hits, it really hits, and suddenly there’s paper everywhere, pens without lids, and a level of focus that makes me question why it doesn’t happen more often.
Random made-up games are a big one, the kind where they invent rules as they go along, change those rules halfway through, and somehow all end up arguing about it anyway, but it still keeps them occupied for longer than I expected.
Playing outside in general works well, even if it starts with “there’s nothing to do” and ends with them somehow finding something to do without me being involved, which is always the goal.
Films and screens obviously have their place too, especially when I just need everyone to sit down for a bit and stop moving, because sometimes that’s the only way the house gets a moment of calm.
And then there are the things that shouldn’t work but do, like giving them a random task, letting them “help” with something, or just leaving them to figure it out themselves.
None of it is consistent.
None of it is guaranteed.
But when something does work, even for a short amount of time, I take it as a win.
Because realistically, keeping four kids busy isn’t about perfection.
It’s about finding what works in that moment… and going with it.
