Teaching tweens how to cook is one of the best ways to boost their independence, confidence, and life skills. By age 12, most kids are ready to take on more responsibility in the kitchen — and they usually love the challenge. Whether they’re helping with family meals or experimenting on their own, giving them a few go-to recipes helps set them up for success (and maybe even gives you a night off!). Here are five easy, delicious meals your 12-year-old can make with minimal help.
1. Breakfast Burrito
Scramble eggs in a nonstick pan, then layer them into a tortilla with shredded cheese, cooked sausage or beans, and some baby spinach. Roll it up and toast lightly in the pan or microwave to melt everything together.
Skills: egg cooking, assembling, pan use, rolling a wrap.
2. DIY Pasta Salad
Boil pasta (penne or spirals work well), then mix with chopped veggies (like cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and sweetcorn), cubed cheese, and a simple dressing (olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper). Chill or serve warm.
Skills: boiling, chopping soft veggies, measuring dressing.
3. English Muffin Pizzas
Split English muffins, spread with tomato sauce, top with shredded cheese and favorite toppings (pepperoni, peppers, olives). Bake in the oven at 180°C/350°F for 8–10 minutes until cheese bubbles.
Skills: oven use (with supervision), layering, choosing toppings.
4. Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Butter the outside of two slices of bread, place cheese inside, and grill in a pan on both sides until golden and melty. Add extras like tomato slices or ham if they’re feeling fancy.
Skills: stovetop safety, flipping in a pan, learning heat control.
5. Chicken (or Veggie) Quesadillas
Sprinkle grated cheese and pre-cooked chicken or beans between two tortillas. Cook in a pan for 2–3 minutes per side until crisp and melty. Slice into wedges and serve with salsa or sour cream.
Skills: assembling, pan cooking, flipping, portioning.
