We are officially in the countdown stage for our trip to Disney Florida and the excitement in this house is louder than the fireworks that will eventually be going off over Cinderella Castle. The kids have asked how many days are left so many times that I am considering tattooing the date on my forehead.
We have been watching Disney films to “prepare”. Which really means the children have strong opinions about which characters they want to meet and we are expected to make those dreams happen. No pressure. I am sure Mickey keeps a detailed schedule of when he is available to meet four British children who are obsessed with his gloves.
Disney outfits have started arriving. The girls are already choosing which pair of ears will go with which park. I am choosing whichever outfit will hide the snack stains by midday. The boys have been practising how to roar like Scar which I am sure everyone in the queue ahead of us will appreciate.
The suitcases have made an appearance in the hallway because apparently we need a three month warm up period before packing. At this point there are random flip flops and sun hats inside them. Also a Barbie. No one knows why.
We have been practising walking long distances too. By practising I mean telling the kids that Florida will involve a lot of walking and the kids replying with confidence that they will be fine while also refusing to walk to the kitchen without complaining.
Every time we talk about Disney the kids end up running around the living room pretending to be different characters. There is always an argument over who gets to be Elsa and no one ever wants to be the villain unless it involves a dramatic cape moment.
The excitement is real though. The countdown makes it feel close and the kids are living for every tiny piece of planning. Even the chaos. Especially the chaos.
Soon we will be in the sunshine. Soon we will be swimming before breakfast. Soon we will be seeing that castle for real. Until then, we have countdown calendars, movie nights and random floaties appearing in the house like they have sprouted legs.
Florida is coming. We just have to survive the countdown.
