Low-Energy Ways I Recharge After a Long Day

Because sometimes even self-care feels like too much work

Some days end with a quiet sigh. Others end with someone wiping snot on your leggings and you questioning your life choices.

Either way, when the kids are finally (maybe?) asleep and the house goes semi-silent, there’s this beautiful window of time where you could theoretically do something restorative. But if you’re like me, by that point your brain is mush, your body is a bit achey, and “taking care of yourself” feels like one more thing on your to-do list.

So, here are my low-energy, no-fuss ways I recharge after a long day — no yoga mats, meditation apps, or clean surfaces required.

1. Scroll Guilt-Free (Yes, Really)

Sometimes the scroll is the soul-soother. Memes, reels, watching someone else clean their house? Therapeutic. No shame in zoning out — just maybe try not to order another £80 in pyjamas.

2. The “Lights Off, Tea On” Ritual

I boil the kettle, turn off most of the lights, and drink tea in the dark like a caffeinated woodland creature. Somehow, it’s calming. Herbal tea + zero noise = brain reset.

3. Lying Down With No Plans to Get Up

This is not a nap. It’s a declaration of surrender. Phone down. Eyes closed. Just… be horizontal. It’s a vibe.

4. Mindless TV That Doesn’t Ask Anything of Me

No emotional investment required. No plot to follow. Just put on something familiar or trashy — something that lets your brain soften. Yes, I’m watching the same season of New Girl again. No, I don’t want to talk about it.

5. The Silent Shower

Lights dimmed, door locked, no pressure to shave or exfoliate. Just warm water and your own thoughts (or better yet, no thoughts at all). Bonus points if you use the “fancy” soap.

6. Texting “I’m Done” to a Fellow Tired Mum

That’s it. Just “I’m done.” No explanations. She gets it. You feel seen. That’s real friendship.

7. Putting on Pyjamas at 5PM

Is it bedtime? No. Is it illegal? Also no. It’s the uniform of a woman who’s finished with the day emotionally, even if it’s not over logistically.

8. Doing Something Tiny Just for Me

Lighting a candle. Spritzing a face mist. Hiding a piece of chocolate behind a cupboard door and eating it in peace. These are the micro-acts of rebellion that keep me going.

9. Sitting in the Chaos Without Trying to Fix It

Sometimes I just sit. Surrounded by toys, socks, and mysterious crumbs. I don’t tidy. I don’t panic. I just let it be. That in itself is an act of peace.

10. Reminding Myself: I Don’t Have to Be Productive Right Now

I’ll whisper it to myself if I have to: Rest is not laziness. You’re allowed to just… stop. No output required.

Let’s Normalise Lazy Evenings

Not every evening has to be a glow-up. Some nights are about survival, silence, and snacks. And honestly? That’s enough. You’re enough.

So the next time you feel like you “should” be doing more in your free time — remember that recharging doesn’t always look like a bubble bath. Sometimes it looks like falling asleep in yesterday’s makeup with one sock on.

And that, my friend, is sacred.
